Abstract
Background: Activated carbon is a chemical substance which has typical properties, such as a high porosity, a wide surface area, can be active to absorp anything that contacted to the activated carbon. It can be produced from a number of material precursors like woods, agricultural wastes, coals, sintetic resins and many more. For example, it can be used durian peel waste for making activated carbon. Durian peel waste that thrown away carelessly can create the air pollution. Durian peel waste can be modified to activated carbon and can be used as adsorbents for liquid wastes. Method: This research uses laboratory experiments with some of work steps like production of carbon from durian peel waste, a chemical activation of the carbon and characterization of activated carbon using FTIR, SEM-EDS and BET methods. Results: FTIR results from the samples, before and after activated using a 25% natrium hydroxide and sulphuric acid solutions, show the infrared spectrums from –OH, C – H and C = O group on the surface of carbon; the carbon samples have a difference in pore diameter for sampel A, A1 and A2 (1,162 μm, 1,790 μm and 1,214 μm consecutively); and carbon samples have a difference in surface area for sampel A1 and A2 (421,133 m2/g and 51,019 m2/g consecutively). Conclusion: According to the results, it can be concluded that infrared spectrum from carbon samples has been shown hydroxyl (–OH), carbon-hydrogen (C – H) and carbonyl (C = O) group on the surface of carbon adanya, the differences on pore diameters and surface areas.
