Abstract

At this time the practice of self-medication or self-medication is increasingly being carried out by the community. This was done for various reasons, including feeling that his illness was just a minor illness that did not need to be treated by a doctor and had experienced the same pain before. This study aims to get a picture of people's behavior when looking for drugs in pharmacies in self-medication practice in the Bengkulu City area. This research was conducted using a direct survey research method using observation sheets. Determination of the sample of pharmacies and respondents was done using the purposive sampling technique. From the results of the study, it was found that most people already have their own choice of medicine to relieve the pain they feel (84.7%) and some seek advice from pharmacists in determining drug choices (15.3%). The choice of drugs used in the practice of self-medication by the community is branded drugs (81%) and generic drugs (19%). Drug choices based on drug classification were over-the-counter drugs (21.4%), limited over-thecounter drugs (28.8%), and hard drugs (49.8%). The community's choice in the use of strong drugs as much as 60.87% is based on their own choice and 39.13% is recommended by the pharmacist at the pharmacy. The high level of public behavior in buying hard drugs based on their own choices has a high risk in terms of rational use of drugs if it is not accompanied by education from pharmacists at the pharmacy because the use of hard drugs must be accompanied by a doctor's prescription.
