Abstract

ABSTRACT Poor condition of traditional markets in Bengkulu being the main reason for the researchers conducted this research, even in terms of sanitation they had problems such as insufficient water availability as well as poor waste management systems. Then, markets that did not pay attention to a health aspect can be a source of disease proliferation. The purpose of this study was to determine market conditions, perceptions of empowerment, and how to create a healthy market model for traders to improve cleanliness in traditional markets in the city of Bengkulu. This study used qualitative and quantitative methods (mix method) with a phenomenological descriptive approach. Research informants were selected by purposive sampling at Barukoto and Panorama markets, which consisted of market managers, traders, and buyers. The research sample was including 45 traders, 40 buyers, and 11 managers. The research got various perceptions of the hygiene and sanitation conditions of the traditional markets of Bengkulu. In general, the market societies (traders, buyers, and managers) of the Panorama market felt that they were more dominant in their satisfaction with the hygiene and sanitation conditions of the market. From the 26 aspects of the perception of the assessment, almost half of it (47%) perceive it as sufficient, it was considered as good, 37% felt less than 15%. The society of Barukoto market had a lack perception of waste management on the availability of garbage disposal facilities, the impact was that garbage accumulated and scattered in certain locations. Although the perception of most market society that the waste management system in Barukoto Market was good and satisfying. It was indicated by the availability of facilities, most market societies had inadequate waste storage facilities in managing waste from the traders at the source. A small number of market societies state that they did not provide waste containers. The aspects that were not good enough for traders and visitors were the condition of the market floor and the condition of waste disposal. It is hoped that the two aspects above will be considered in future improvements in addition to other conditions. It is needed efforts to empower the market community to maintain a healthy market.
